So yesterday had a bizarre reminder that yes, I can be totally inept in certain social situations. On a related note, it's weird to see bands that I always thought of as "mine" become more popular.
Of course, the inverse is also true sometimes. Here's a recent example: I never thought I'd be enjoying Britney Spears' "Toxic." But I am, albeit as a cover.
Nickel Creek are a band that's not quite poppy enough for me to enjoy on a superficial level and not quite deep enough for me to enjoy on an emotional one, but they're a band that's skilled enough to almost entirely overcome those obstacles. It was pretty damn cool seeing them this past week, though the highlight of the show wasn't even one of their own songs. Their version of "Toxic" was incredible, and while this recording isn't as good as I'd like, it's the best I can find. Everyone should download it, because it's not every day you get the chance to hear an electronic, ProTooled-like-crazy pop song played (faithfully!) live on violin, mandolin, guitar and upright bass. And you really shouldn't miss the chance.
