Sugarcubes - Birthday
Bear with me...
I'm not sure the lyrics to this song make any sense. And if they do, they may be somewhat disturbing. But the sound, the sound is great. Not that this is atypical for Bjork, but still. This is the first song of hers I fell in love with, and I still get it stuck it in my head. And it's Bjork's voice that does it, of course. This might not be her best vocal with the Sugarcubes (maybe "Regina" for that?) but at the end, when there's only about half a minute left in the song, she shows why the lyrics don't matter, doing a little bit of scat-type singing. It's glorious, effervescent, impossible to put into text. Listen.

this song is quite great. As you may know, i hate birthdays, my own in particular. as you may also know, this song has nothing to do with birthdays (my analysis has always been old man/young girl and it's a little gross). I do like to afford myself one birthday treat and that's a birthday song on my birthday. I tend to use this one now, it allows me to celebrate without acknowledging. In a way i think that this song has the power to eclipse most of her solo work, it's so sweet and tinkling. if only we could all walk that line as well as she does.
I always thought it had to do with both birthdays and an old man/young girl.
And I agree that solo, Bjork hasn't really equalled this. But I think that's in large part because she's not trying to - she's gone a more personal, introspective route that doesn't allow for this type of song as readily. Maybe?
oh i agree, she definitely has. I think i just prefer this song to the more personal stuff. but i enjoy both.
