This is one of my favorite parts of one of my favorite plays.
Day Nineteen
“If we shadows have offended,/Think but this, and all is mended,/That you have but slumber’d here,/While these visions did appear./And this weak and idle theme,/No more yielding but a dream.”Nietzsche has an interesting idea about dreams. I think I far prefer it to Freud, especially since I’ve never understood Freud anyway. Nietzsche thinks that dreams influence – directly affect – our waking lives. That what we dream about changes how we are when we’re not dreaming. Not literally; just because you dream you’re an elephant doesn’t mean you’ll become one in reality. But it does mean that you’ll be plodding, dull, and perhaps aged-looking.
I really like this Nietzsche guy.
And I’m going to be dreaming of flying tonight.
